Introduction

“Lets do sport”

With the aim to promote healthy leisure and prevent drug use amongst young people, in 2008 the Public Health Agency undertook the program “Lets do sport”, co-financed   by the National Plan on Drugs. The program counts on the support of the Barcelona institute of Sport and the collaboration of the Mensalus foundation (prevention of drug dependence through sport) and the group Ubae & Eurofitness.

The group Ubae & Eurofitness collaborate by programming and developing all the physical activities that are carried out within the program in two districts of Barcelona in their fitness centers “Can Dragó” and “Horta”. The group offers their experience in the organization and the carrying out of sport activities and count on their fitness instructors for the physical part of the program.

“Lets do sport” uses the practice of physical exercise in a group as a way of prevention. The physical exercise can be preventive providing the instructors who carry out the activity know how to act appropriately and have the necessary training and sufficient knowledge on drug use prevention.

It has been demonstrated that promoting a lifestyle with a rich and diverse leisure time amongst youngsters is one of the protective factors against drug use, which is why the program works to encourage self-image, promote autonomy, broaden social relationships and offer alternative healthy leisure. The task is divided into 3 phases:

-         School day, four hour excursion within school hours. The students are accompanied by their physical education teacher, they visit the fitness centre to get to know and practice some of the activities that are on offer to our clients (Cycling, Fit Combat, BOSU,…) together with a talk on the prevention of drug use, given by the Mensalus Foundation who are experts in prevention in youngsters.

-         Continuity of activity, a program of directed activities during 3 months for those students who wish to take part. It includes 2 sessions a week after school (Wednesday and Friday afternoon) doing sport activities to get fit and work on habits of healthy living. The program is complete with a sports outing once a month at the weekend to realize and exploit the resources available to young people to practice sport in the city of Barcelona.

-         Summer Sport camp, to promote and encourage sport activities in leisure time and offer different sport alternatives both in the gym and the sport facilities offered by the city, we have programmed two fortnights in July where the youngsters can enjoy days full of physical activity and healthy leisure proposals, together with workshops on how to manage one’s own leisure time.

the 2nd and 3rd phase, with a special interest on the indicators selected for

valuing changes of attitude, conduct and knowledge.

1st PHASE (School excursion)

The first phase, as an excursion it is programmed to introduce the resources offered by the sports centers, presenting them as an alternative way of healthy leisure .

It is offered in the first quarter (from January to March) to the schools in the district as an extracurricular activity for 14-15 year old students in secondary school.

The sessions last 4 hours which are carried out in the morning from 09.00h until 13.00h. The session is divided into 2 parts, theory, which last one hour and physical exercise which lasts three hours. Regarding the theoretical, a psychologist specialized in physical activity and sport gives an interactive talk on the consumption of toxic substances and about the benefits of physical activity and sport. In the practical part, the youngsters learn about and get to practice different physical activities that are programmed for them. The proposed physical activities are carried out by instructors from the sports centers who have been especially trained for the program.

Each of the activities presented last 20 minutes as the idea is for them to try a series of activities.

The timetable is carried out in the following way:

2nd PHASE (continued activity)

The second phase, continued activity, proposed as an initiation activity to try different sports and to offer alternative leisure to youngsters. Using the fitness centers, they have adapted the different products that are offered to the members to the needs and abilities of the adolescents (music, material, activities, etc) and with a technical content well suited to them (sequencing of content to develop, progression of intensity and difficulty of the exercise,..)

The activity is carried out during the second quarter (from April to June) focusing on two days a week, Wednesday and Friday as on these days the public secondary schools don’t have classes in the afternoon. With the purpose of showing the different resources that young people have at their disposal to carry out physical exercise free, the program is complemented with three optional excursions for the youngsters at the weekend accompanied by monitors, where they try to show the possibilities that are on offer in Barcelona to carry out physical exercise.

The different activities last 40 minutes so that 3 activities can be carried out a day over 2 hours.

The activities developed in this second phase are divided in the following way:

-         Choreographed activities: Sessions of physical activity where basic movements are used from different activities with music to develop a choreography  (Aerobic, Aero dance, Fit-Combat and Step)

-         Activity : Low impact sessions where different posture, stretching and relaxation techniques are used to improve the flexibility, body awareness and posture control.

-         Activities not choreographed: Training sessions varied with different materials, they work with circuits as well as with tasks (Body-bar, Bosu and physical conditioning).

-         Cycling: Cardiovascular training sessions with the bicycle to the rhythm of music.

-         Water activities:
Aquatic fitness sessions in the shallow pool to work the basic physical abilities.

Together with the weakly sessions 3 excursions are organized at the weekend (once a month) to present other possibilities that the girls and boys have at their disposal to do sport and physical activity. Some of the proposals are:

-         Beach activities

-         Bicycle festival in Barcelona

-         Roller skating

-         Bowling alley

-         Skating

3rd PHASE (Summer Camp)

To promote the work carried out in the second phase, a summer camp is organized with the students from the second phase that are interested in continuing to do physical activity.

The activity is carried out in July during the school summer holidays over two fortnights, from Monday to Saturday from 10.00h until 14.00h. The activity program has been made to follow the evolution of the students of the second phase, taking into account the participation of the students in two workshops “Sport and prevention” and “Managing free time”; the first is aimed at strengthening protective factors in students while the second focuses on them programming activities outside of the centre.

The different physical activities carried out in the centre last 45 minutes and they are divided in the following way:

-         Gymkhanas: court games and physical tests that can be carried out individually or in small groups in the fitness centers.
